We had decided to take the "Build Your Own Bronze Salute Cannon" class. These cannons are very often used by the local windjammers for sunset salutes. We had always wanted to have our own - Sharon says we can now shoot at each other, since we will each make our own. We also wanted to have an introduction of the art of machining. These cannons were brought in to show us what we were supposed to produce:
This is the stock from which the cannons will be made. In this case, it was manganese bronze salvaged from the propeller shafts of lobster boats.
Duke, one of our instructors, is showing us how to practice turning pieces of wood before attacking the bronze.
Sharon turned out to be only the second woman to have ever taken the class.
After practicing on the lathe we cut out the wooden carriages for the cannons.
Here Sharon is making the bronze wheels that go on the carriages.
When we returned to our boat, in the evening, we decided to jig for mackerel and were lucky enough to catch a few for a yummy fresh seafood dinner.
